Aotearoa’s Traditional Holistic Healing System
Long before modern medicine reached the shores of Aotearoa (New Zealand), Māori cultivated a profoundly effective and deeply spiritual system of healing known as Rongoā. Far more than just a collection of herbal remedies, Rongoā Māori is a comprehensive, holistic approach to wellbeing that intertwines the physical, emotional, and spiritual realms.
For those looking to understand indigenous health practices, natural remedies, or the cultural heritage of New Zealand, exploring Rongoā offers incredible insight into a system where humanity and nature are viewed as one. At House of Rehua, we are dedicated to honoring these traditions and sharing the restorative power of our native forests with the world.
What is Rongoā? Understanding the Holistic Philosophy
At its core, Rongoā is the traditional Māori healing system that utilizes the medicinal properties of native New Zealand flora found across the North and South Islands. However, viewing it purely through a Western botanical lens misses the full picture.
In Māori philosophy, health is not simply the absence of physical symptoms. True wellness requires a delicate balance across multiple dimensions. Rongoā practitioners (known as Tohunga) focus on restoring harmony to a person's mauri (vital life force) and wairua (spirit). If a person is spiritually or emotionally unwell, physical illness is often the result. Therefore, healing the tinana (body) is impossible without also addressing the mind and spirit, while respecting tapu (sacred natural laws).

The Essential Role of Karakia
You cannot separate Rongoā from its spiritual foundations. Karakia (prayer) is the cornerstone of this practice.
Before a single leaf is harvested from the native New Zealand bush, a karakia is offered to Tāne Mahuta, the god of the forest and all living things within it. This practice acknowledges the spiritual dimension of the healing process, seeks divine guidance, and ensures that the natural world is treated with the utmost reverence. Karakia protects both the healer and the patient, grounding the physical medicine in spiritual intent.
A History of Suppression and Resilience
The knowledge of Rongoā is a testament to cultural resilience. In 1907, the New Zealand government passed the Tohunga Suppression Act, a law that effectively outlawed traditional Māori healing practices. This forced Tohunga to take their life-saving knowledge underground to protect it.
It wasn't until the Māori Welfare Act of 1962 that these harsh restrictions were finally lifted. Today, Rongoā is experiencing a powerful resurgence across Aotearoa, recognized not only as a vital cultural taonga (treasure) but also as a complementary therapy alongside modern healthcare.
7 Powerful Native Plants Used in Modern Rongoā
The pristine native forests of New Zealand serve as a natural pharmacy. Māori developed sophisticated methods to extract medicinal properties from bark, leaves, roots, and sap—creating infusions, decoctions, poultices, and balms.
Here are seven essential native plants utilized in traditional Rongoā practice, many of which inspire our Natural Rongoā Products:
- Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum): Perhaps the most famous of all Rongoā plants, easily identified by its heart-shaped leaves with insect holes. Kawakawa is an incredible all-rounder. Traditionally, the leaves were chewed to relieve toothaches, while topical applications were crafted to treat cuts, bruises, and severe skin conditions. Discover the soothing properties of this plant in our signature Kawakawa products.
- Tupakihi / Tutu (Coriaria arborea): This plant highlights the immense expertise required in Rongoā, as parts of the plant are highly toxic and can be fatal if ingested incorrectly. Tohunga possessed the specific knowledge to safely prepare Tupakihi. It was traditionally applied externally to treat bone fractures, joint inflammation, and severe bruising.
- Kūmarahou (Pomaderris kumeraho): Often referred to as "gumdigger's soap" because its crushed flowers lather in water, Kūmarahou is a powerhouse for the respiratory system. It was traditionally brewed into a bitter tonic or tea to clear the lungs, treat asthma, soothe severe coughs, and combat bronchial infections.
- Koromiko (Hebe salicifolia): Koromiko is renowned for its gastrointestinal healing properties. The young, unexpanded leaf buds were chewed or brewed into a liquid to rapidly treat stomach aches and dysentery. Its effectiveness is so well-documented that dried Koromiko was actually shipped overseas to New Zealand soldiers during World War II.
- Tarata / Lemonwood (Pittosporum eugenioides): Emitting a strong, beautiful citrus scent, Tarata was widely used for oral hygiene and respiratory issues. The gum was chewed to cure bad breath, and the leaves were steeped in hot water to create a soothing steam treatment for sore throats.
- Pukatea (Laurelia novae-zelandiae): Found in swampy forest areas across Aotearoa, the bark of the Pukatea tree contains an active compound called pukateine, which has strong analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. A decoction of the inner bark was traditionally used to soothe severe toothaches or applied topically to relieve the pain of ulcers.
- Tataramoa / Bush Lawyer (Rubus cissoides): Despite its fierce, grasping thorns, Tataramoa is a profoundly calming plant in the Rongoā arsenal. The leaves were traditionally brewed into a tea to support the nervous system, ease anxiety, and treat stomach cramps and dysmenorrhea.
Practicing Rongoā Today: Safety and Sustainability
As interest in natural and holistic health grows globally, many are turning back to indigenous plant medicine. However, Rongoā is not a DIY trend.
Proper application requires deep knowledge. As seen with plants like Tupakihi, using native flora without traditional understanding can be dangerous. Furthermore, the commercialization of these plants raises concerns about over-harvesting. Tikanga (customary practices) dictates that one must only take what is needed, ensuring the parent plant is never harmed and that future generations have access to these resources.
At House of Rehua, we strictly adhere to sustainable harvesting practices and traditional tikanga. For those wanting to incorporate Rongoā into their lives safely, we invite you to explore our carefully crafted, ethically sourced Rongoā products to experience the true healing power of Aotearoa.
